True enough, I don’t know squat about the actors who’ve been cast for Meteor Garden 2018. The new Shan Cai is at least familiar because I’ve seen episodes of A Love So Beautiful over the summer. But yeah, these guys are babies!😂 Probably no more than toddlers when the original version aired 17 years ago. (FACT: I was introduced to Meteor Garden because of a Harry Potter fanfic about the Marauders)
Still, I couldn’t help but wax nostalgic when the teaser trailer was released last week. This one’s quite a lavish production compared to the original and at 48 episodes (?!?) stands to be one of the longest adaptations of its source material. From someone who has seen all three versions (Taiwanese, Japanese and Korean), there are two nitpicks I wish they’ll address in MG2018:
DO NOT drag the love triangle angle
Boys Over Flowers caught my ire on this one when they dragged Jan-di’s wishy-washy attitude to the last episode. It didn’t help that she was constantly flip-flopping over her feelings for both guys with Ji-hoo getting the meatier backstory over Jun-pyo.
Give Mei Zhou a decent backstory
Among the four guys, this one gets the short end of the stick in terms of character development. He was luckier in Meteor Garden because they gave him a love interest in Season 2 but HYD and BoF fell short in expounding what could have been an interesting arc for F4’s kindest and emotionally mature member.
No more fangirling from me though. I’m ancient.🤣 Let the new generation enjoy this narrative and may this fuel their interest in Asian dramas for many years to come.
